Anyone who enjoys and respects the game of golf has a wish list of courses they'd like to visit. Luckily, we've made that bucket list for you!
Bay Harbor (Quarry)
Michigan, USA
Quarry is one of three courses at Bay Harbor, and its 40-foot gorges and stone cliffs make it one of the most unique 9-hole courses in the world. "Bay Harbor Golf Club is one of the most picturesque golf sites in the world... it might be America's most diverse set of holes," according to Golfweek Magazine.
Chambers Bay Golf Course
Washington, USA
This course, which is set to host the 2015 US Open, has a number of unique features, including a shared fairway between holes 1 and 18. You should definitely play "Free Fall," a par 4 with an 80-foot drop and two potential greens. Finally, the 18th century is represented by a wall of concrete structures that date back to the period when it was a gravel mine.
Whistling Straits
Wisconsin, USA
Pete Dye had quite the project on his hands, given the canvas he had to deal on – a former army base. To make the course playable, Dye had to remove concrete bunkers, an airstrip, and underground fuel storage tanks. The dynamite goes off! The course has hosted two PGA Championships and one US Senior Open since then.
Shadow Creek Golf Course
Nevada, USA
This highly-rated Tom Fazio-designed course is one of the most luxurious golfing experiences available. Since it started out as a desert wasteland, this course is exceptional. Shadow Creek was the most costly golf course ever designed at the time of its construction.
El Camaleón at the Fairmont Mayakoba
Quintana Roo, Mexico
If your ball goes in there, it's time to take a drop. Because of its ever-changing obstacles, this course is named after the chameleon. Sand dunes and mangroves line the fairways, cenotes (subterranean caves) with names like "The Devil's Mouth," and stunning lagoons are all hazards on this course.
Streamsong
Florida, USA
Forget your typical Florida golf course. Streamsong was built on an old phosphate mining operation that produced a 2,000 acre pile of sand. Over time, dunes were formed and grass began to grow, making this course feel like a piece of the Scottish coast.
Old Works Golf Club
Montana, USA
The track is built on the site of the former Anaconda Copper Mine, which was one of the largest Superfund cleanup sites in the United States. Elements from the mine were used by Jack Nicklaus. He framed the bunkers with a byproduct of copper smelting, as well as the smelter, furnace, and flue.
Extreme 19th at Legend Golf & Safari Resort
Limpopo, South Africa
The image speaks for itself. The Hanglip Mountain tee, which is 400 meters above the ground and only accessible by helicopter, is stunning. Pro golfers and celebrities travel from all over the world for a chance to play the world's most difficult par-3. Padraig Harrington was the first to achieve par, and he was preceded by a slew of others.
Uummannaq Greenland
Qaasuitsup, Greenland
If the heat on the course causes you to sweat a lot on your back, playing on a giant iceberg with an orange ball could be a better option for you. The World Ice Golf Championships are held in Uummannaq, and it's a thing. The rules are similar to regular golf, with the exception that the holes are a little shorter, the cups are bigger, and all is frozen.
